Subfloor

Before installing any flooring, one needs a level and solid subfloor. In older homes, floors often squeak when you walk on some parts. This is almost always due to movement in the subfloor. If upon removing the flooring, the plywood subfloor is in good shape, you can eliminate the squeaking by adding screws to the plywood sheets. Sometimes though, like in the case of ceramic and glued down flooring, the subfloor has residue that makes it uneven and unusable for new flooring. The same goes for when your subfloor has water damage. In cases like these, the subfloor needs to be replaced and new plywood sheets need to be glued in.

Vinyl

Vinyl flooring is a very popular option in Montreal because of its durability, modern look, and full water resistance. It’s an excellent choice for basements, kitchens, bathrooms, or any space where moisture might be a concern. Most click-lock vinyl planks are designed to look like real wood, often with realistic textures, while being much easier to maintain than natural hardwood. Standard vinyl is generally affordable, but there are also luxury vinyl options available that offer higher-end finishes and improved wear resistance.

Hardwood

Hardwood flooring remains a timeless and elegant choice for homes in Montreal. It adds natural warmth and increases the value of a property. Available in a wide variety of wood species—like oak, maple, or walnut—hardwood offers rich textures and tones that suit both classic and modern interiors. One of the biggest advantages of hardwood is its longevity: when properly maintained, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times, allowing it to last for generations.

Hardwood is best installed in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways—not recommended for bathrooms or basements unless engineered wood is used. It requires more careful installation than floating floors, as it's usually nailed or glued down to a subfloor.

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood is made from a real wood top layer over plywood, offering the look of solid wood with better stability. It’s great for basements or condos in Montreal and can handle moisture better than solid hardwood.

Sanding and refinishing

Sanding and refinishing is the best way to bring old hardwood floors back to life. Over the years, hardwood can lose its shine, get scratched, or become uneven in color. Instead of replacing it, refinishing allows you to restore the original beauty of the wood.

The process involves three main steps. First, we sand down the surface to remove the old finish and any scratches or imperfections. Then, we apply a stain if desired to adjust the color. Finally, we seal the wood with multiple coats of polyurethane to protect it and give it a smooth, durable finish. The result is a floor that looks brand new and can last for many more years, often decades, with proper care.
